Many women ask about the strength of breast implants and their risk of rupture. Breast implants are actually quite strong.

As you can see, implants are not likely to rupture from a single incident like your two year old jumping on you, during exercise, during a car accident or during sex. Most of the time, implants seem to wear out slowly over their lifespan and form leaks called “fold flaws.” The folds in the implant shell gradually weaken over time and are analogous to folding a piece of paper in the same spot repeatedly. The fold area eventually weakens enough that it leaks. The rupture rate of both saline and silicone implants seems to be around 1% per year, which accumulates over time. Although a rupture can happen at any time, the risk is low initially and gradually increases over time.

Implant rupture is not a common problem. Ruptured implants can generally be fixed by replacing the implant through the same incision. The low risk of rupture is one of the many factors that contribute to the very high level of satisfaction among our breast augmentation patients.
